“If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to
them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body,
what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
James 2:15-17

Physical & Spiritual Nourishment

Needy families come to our food ministry in El Paso, Texas, for groceries, encouragement, and prayer. Volunteers are on hand every Friday to help distribute staple foods, fresh produce, and bread. Some food is donated and some we buy from wholesale suppliers with funds from donors and fundraising. Throughout the week, we are busy receiving and packing the food. More than 1,200 families are registered as needing help, including low-income families, single mothers, and the indigent elderly.

Each family is allowed to come once a month for their grocery package, over 200 a week. They are invited to take part in our prayer and praise session; this is voluntary but we find most people are happy to join in. Everything must be in Spanish for the majority do not know English and the rest are bilingual, as are most of our staff and volunteers. The music and praise are lively and uplifting. For those who request it, prayers of healing are offered as well. We see some wonderful results from this. We find the spiritual aspect of our ministry to the needy is much appreciated.

There is much poverty here on the border of Mexico, and one doesn't have to look very far to find heartbreaking stories. Our help center distributes donations of clothes, household goods, and furniture to destitute families. Since the present violence in Mexico began a few years ago with the escalation of the drug wars, many innocent people from the city of Juarez and the small towns along the Rio Grande have been coming as refugees to El Paso and the surrounding rural areas. Most, including many of the children, have witnessed relatives murdered in broad daylight. Refugee families are living in desperate conditions as relatives with a small home or trailer welcome those fleeing the violence and share whatever they can. We have seen extended families of more than twenty members crowded into a very small quarters. Sometimes a single bed and a hug means all the world to them.

Special Celebrations Every December
A “posada” (a traditional Mexican procession reenacting the Holy Family’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem as Mary is about to give birth to Jesus) is planned for children on a Saturday in early December. In addition to the traditional procession with Joseph and Mary knocking on doors until one finally opens to them, there are piñatas, jumping balloons, and entertainment. Gift booths with toys and candy are set up. We invite moms to choose clothes for their family from long tables set up in our hall. Volunteers receive the reward of seeing happy smiles on children and parents.

On a Saturday just before Christmas, our annual Christmas Food Distribution takes place. More than 1,000 families receive holiday packages of food and treats. We have been hosting this event for more than 30 years. Many volunteers from the local community join together to make the day a wonderful experience for all. Christmas donations from our faithful partners make all this possible. Both recipients and volunteers are blessed with great joy.
